Two Backup Horror Stories Every Videographer Should Know (And the Rule That Prevents Both)
I want to tell you two stories. One is about the biggest animation studio in the world nearly losing an entire film. The other is about a working videographer losing three couples’ wedding films from a parked car. They happened decades apart, at completely different scales, and they are the same story: everyone believes they’re backed up until the day they find out they weren’t. If you shoot for a living, or you’re the person your family trusts with the footage, read to the end, because the rule that prevents both disasters is simple and takes one evening to set up.
The short version: Pixar accidentally ran a delete command on the Toy Story 2 file server, then discovered their backups had been silently failing for a month. The film survived on one home computer. Twenty-five years later, a car break-in in LA took a MacBook and one SSD holding three couples’ wedding films. The fix for both: back up on the day, back up at home, back up to the cloud, and actually verify your backups work.
Story one: Pixar deletes Toy Story 2
During production of Toy Story 2, somebody at Pixar ran rm * on the drive where the film’s files were kept. On Linux and Unix machines, that command removes everything on the file system as fast as it can. One of the technical staff described watching it happen: Woody’s hat disappeared, then his boots, then Woody disappeared entirely. Then Buzz, Potato Head, Hamm and Rex vanished, and whole sequences, Al’s Toy Barn, Andy’s room, started dropping off the disk. Work that would take 20 or 30 people a solid year to recreate was being erased in seconds. They literally shouted at the systems team to pull the machine out of the wall.
Bad, but survivable, right? That’s what backups are for. Except when they went to restore, they found the backups were bad. The backup system had been failing for about a month, and nobody knew. That’s the part of this story that should keep you up at night. Not the deletion; deletions happen. The month of silent backup failure that nobody noticed.
Saved by a mum working from home
The film survived because of Galyn Susman, the film’s technical director, who was working from home after having her baby and had been copying the entire film to her home computer so she could see her children and keep working. They wrapped that machine in blankets and pillows, seat-belted it into the back seat, drove it to Pixar slower than anyone has ever driven, and carried it in, as one of them put it, like an Egyptian pharaoh. The machine turned on. There was the movie.
Toy Story 2 was saved by a mother who wanted to work from home. That’s insane, and it’s also the accidental proof of a principle: the copy that saved the film was the one stored somewhere else.
Story two: three weddings in a parked car
Now the version of this story that actually happens to people like us. In Los Angeles, a videographer’s car was broken into while parked in Koreatown. The thief took a MacBook Pro and a Samsung portable SSD. On that one laptop and that one drive: the wedding footage of three couples. Three once-in-a-lifetime days that cannot be reshot, sitting in a parked car with no other copy in the world.
One bride ended up crowdfunding a $2,000 no-questions-asked cash reward just to try to get the footage back. This is nightmare material, and every working videographer has, at some point, driven around with a version of that drive in the boot.
Be honest with yourself for a second: how many shoots are on your working drive right now? If that drive left your possession tonight, what exactly would you be telling your clients tomorrow?
The rule that prevents both
Two failures, one pattern. Pixar had backups that didn’t work. The wedding videographer had copies that lived in the same bag. The rule that beats both:
- Back up on the day. Before you sleep, the cards are copied to a second drive. The car park between the venue and your house is where footage dies.
- Back up at home. A copy on a drive that stays at home, separate from the working drive in your bag. Two copies in one bag is one copy.
- Back up to the cloud. The off-site copy is the one that survives theft, fire and flood. It’s the Galyn Susman copy: the one that lives somewhere else entirely.
- Verify. Pixar’s backups ran every day and failed every day. A backup you haven’t verified is a hope, not a backup.
